Background and Objectives: Rapid advancements in information technology, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), have brought about profound transformations in education and curriculum development. The purpose of this study was to identify the key drivers and influential events shaping education and curriculum futures in light of AI development through a systematic review.
Methods: Given the breadth and emerging nature of the topic, this study adopted a systematic review approach. Persian and English language scholarly papers published between 2021 and 2024 (1400–1403 in the Persian calendar) were examined. A comprehensive and systematic search was conducted across major international databases, including Web of Science, Scopus, EBSCO, and Google Scholar, as well as reputable publishers, such as ScienceDirect, Emerald, Taylor & Francis, Wiley, and SAGE. To ensure adequate coverage of domestic research, the Iranian databases, including SID and Noormags were also reviewed. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis.
Results: The systematic review of 41 selected articles revealed substantial thematic diversity and a notable increase in publications, particularly over the past two years. During the data analysis process, 87 initial codes were identified as key drivers and influencing forces affecting future education and curriculum in the context of AI development. Following data refinement and the removal of overlapping or irrelevant codes, 40 final codes were retained and organized into five overarching themes: (1) technological advancements (12 subthemes), (2) emerging educational transformations (12 subthemes), (3) human resource empowerment (5 subthemes), (4) socio-cultural considerations (6 subthemes), and (5) legal and policy frameworks (5 subthemes).
Conclusions: The findings indicated that expanding application of AI in education and curriculum development necessitates the establishment of appropriate infrastructures, targeted investment in professional development programs, and the formulation of effective policies to ensure the responsible and impactful use of AI, alongside the systematic empowerment of teachers.
