Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the scientific and ethical position of Farhangian University professors and instructors according to the indicators of the Ministry of Science and Research, which was followed by and the presentation of different methods for promoting their scientific and ethical stance from the viewpoints of faculty members during the academic years of 2016-2017. The population of this descriptive survey consisted of all faculty members and instructors of the Northwest Farhangian University campuses (i.e. the provinces of West Azarbaijan, East Azarbaijan, Ardebil, Kurdistan, Kermanshah, Zanjan, Hamedan, Qazvin and Guilan). Random sampling was employed to select 110 faculty members as the research sample whose data was accordingly collected and analyzed. The research instruments were a standard 28-item questionnaire developed on the basis of the Ministry criteria and indicators of promotion and a researcher-made questionnaire of 24 questions with 12 items for scientific and 12 items for ethical indicators, both of which were scored on the basis of five-option Likert scales. The results indicated that the university lecturers' and assistant professors' performance status was measured to be lower than the promotion indicators in all the categories of science and research, design and production, authorship and supervising with the exception of quantity and quality of teaching. In addition, the two groups were found to be far below the average of the indicators of science and ethics. However, the faculty members and instructors performed better in terms of scientific indicators rather than ethical ones. Therefore, the necessary strategies in the university policy-making and planning should be targeted towards promoting the indicators of science as the first priority and those of ethics as the second priority in the future.
